What asbestos fence removal involves
Fibro and Super Six fences are corrugated or flat sheets of cement mixed with asbestos fibre. Left alone and intact they hold the fibres in, but once a panel cracks, flakes or gets broken the risk rises.
Removal means taking each sheet off its rails without snapping it, keeping the material wet while it is handled, then wrapping and carrying it to an approved facility. It also covers posts, capping and the debris that has built up along the base. Our Super Six fencing guide shows how to spot the profile.
How to tell if your fence is asbestos
Older fibro fences often have flat or corrugated cement sheets, including the familiar Super Six profile. A fence installed before 1990 may contain asbestos, but its age, shape or surface condition cannot prove it.
Cracked edges, weathering and broken panels are reasons to get it assessed, not a reliable way to identify the material. Don't break a piece off to check. A qualified person can arrange a sample for laboratory testing, which is the only way to be certain.
Is it safe to paint or leave an asbestos fence?
Intact, undamaged asbestos-cement sheeting is generally lower risk when left undisturbed. If your fence is in good condition, a professional assessment can help you decide whether to leave it in place or arrange removal.
Painting and surface preparation can disturb the material. Drilling, water-blasting or sanding can release asbestos fibres, so don't prepare or paint a suspect fence yourself. Damaged, broken or deteriorating panels should be assessed by a qualified professional.
Can I remove an asbestos fence myself in WA?
WA rules allow homeowners to remove up to 10 m² of bonded, non-friable asbestos themselves, subject to strict safety and lawful disposal requirements. Most boundary fences exceed that limit, so a licensed removalist is required.
Any amount of friable asbestos requires a licensed removalist. Even where unlicensed removal is permitted, WorkSafe WA strongly recommends using a licensed asbestos removalist. Don't split a larger job into small sections to avoid the licence requirement.
Check the current WorkSafe WA asbestos rules for homeowners before making any decision. Not sure what you've got? Leave it undisturbed and ask for help.
Step by step: how the job is carried out
- 1Send your suburb and fence length through the quote form.
- 2A removalist visits, confirms the material, measures the run and notes access and gate positions.
- 3You receive a written quote, and the licence class needed is confirmed.
- 4On the day the work zone is marked, nearby neighbours are asked to close windows and the sheets are dampened.
- 5Panels are unscrewed or unclipped whole, stacked flat, wrapped in heavy plastic and labelled.
- 6Soil along the fence line is checked for fragments and cleaned up, then the load goes to an approved facility.
Safety and regulations
In Western Australia a Class A licence covers every type of asbestos, friable material included, while a Class B licence covers non-friable (bonded) material only. Bonded work over 10 m² needs a licensed removalist. The current rules sit on the WorkSafe WA asbestos licences page.
Householders may remove up to 10 m² of non-friable asbestos under the household exemption. That is a legal threshold, not a recommendation to do it yourself, and it never applies to friable material. The 10 m² counts the whole project, so a job cannot be split into smaller pieces to stay under it.
Class A work also needs an independent licensed assessor to carry out air monitoring and the clearance inspection. Read WorkSafe WA guidance on asbestos removal and disposal before you commit to any plan.
- Never drill, sand, scrub, pressure-wash or cut fibro sheets.
- Do not take broken pieces to a general tip or leave them in a household bin.
- Tell shared-boundary neighbours before work starts.
