Super Six asbestos fencing in Mandurah

Super Six is a ridged cement sheet fencing, and sheets made before 1990 may contain asbestos. Removing a Mandurah Super Six fence typically costs $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on length, height and condition. Damage, cutting and cleaning are what put fibres at risk of release.

What Super Six fencing is

Super Six describes a profile: a cement sheet pressed into six broad ridges, widely used for backyard fences across Australia from the mid-twentieth century. Many of those sheets were made with asbestos fibre as reinforcement.

Cement sheet fences like this were sold as a low-cost, fire-resistant boundary for many years. Taking one down is covered in our asbestos fence removal service.

Signs that a fence is Super Six

  • Wide, evenly spaced ridges with a flat grey, slightly rough face.
  • Sheets about six millimetres thick with a clean, chalky edge rather than a layered one.
  • Bolted or nailed to timber or steel rails, often with a cap strip along the top.
  • Stamped or printed brand marks on the back, sometimes worn off.
  • A house or estate built before 1990.

From identification to removal

  1. 1Photograph the fence without touching it, and mark the length and height roughly.
  2. 2Arrange a laboratory test if you need to be certain.
  3. 3Request a written quote through the form.
  4. 4A licensed removalist wets, unfastens and wraps every sheet.
  5. 5The waste goes to an approved facility and you keep the paperwork.

Safety and regulations

In Western Australia a Class A licence covers every type of asbestos, friable material included, while a Class B licence covers non-friable (bonded) material only. Bonded work over 10 m² needs a licensed removalist. The current rules sit on the WorkSafe WA asbestos licences page.

Householders may remove up to 10 m² of non-friable asbestos under the household exemption. That is a legal threshold, not a recommendation to do it yourself, and it never applies to friable material. The 10 m² counts the whole project, so a job cannot be split into smaller pieces to stay under it.

Class A work also needs an independent licensed assessor to carry out air monitoring and the clearance inspection. Read WorkSafe WA guidance on asbestos removal and disposal before you commit to any plan.

  • Do not wash a fibro fence with a high-pressure cleaner. It strips fibres from the surface.
  • Keep children and pets away from damaged panels.
  • Do not reuse old sheets as garden edging or sell them on.

Cost factors for Super Six removal

Across Mandurah and the Peel region, removal typically runs $1,500 to $5,000 or more. See the fence removal cost guide for a clearer breakdown.

  • Fence length and height, and how many corners and gates it has.
  • Sheet condition, since broken panels need more careful clean-up.
  • Truck access to the boundary and distance to the load point.
  • Posts, footings and capping that must be removed along with the sheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Intact, undisturbed cement sheet holds its fibres in, which is why the risk rises when it is damaged. The danger comes when sheets are broken, cut, drilled, sanded or washed with pressure, which can release fibres into the air.

Removal typically costs $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on fence length, height, condition and access. Every job is confirmed by an on-site quote.

Sealing intact sheets is sometimes used as a stopgap, but preparing the surface can disturb it. Seek advice from a licensed assessor before doing anything that touches the surface.

Under the household exemption a householder may remove up to 10 m² of non-friable asbestos, counted across the whole project. This is not a safe DIY endorsement, and projects above that limit need a Class B or Class A licensed removalist.

Only laboratory analysis of a properly collected sample gives a definite answer. A licensed assessor can take the sample so you are not exposed.

It is wrapped, labelled and delivered to a facility approved to accept asbestos. It must never go in a household bin or a general tip.
